What Makes Titanium Unique?

Titanium is created from beach sands rutile, which is gathered in South Africa and Australia. Manufacturers combine rutile with chlorine gas and either coke or tar. Through heat, the ingredients become a sponge that is melted until it is an ingot. They also use Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) and cold hearth furnaces to melt the titanium. The ingot is then sent through mill forms to create metal.

When manufacturers expose titanium to oxygen, it develops an oxide film layer. This is key to creating products that are resistant to corrosion and erosion. If titanium is scratched, it can heal itself as soon as it is exposed to oxygen and grows a new oxide film.

Titanium is commonly used in marine, industrial, medical, aerospace, chemical processing, consumer, and sporting products. Originally, it was used in the military aerospace industry because it has a strong density and structure; titanium density (which affects strength) is available in grades from .160 lb/in3 to .175 lb/in3.

As a metal with high biocompatibility, titanium is useful for knee and hip implants, dental implants, craniofacial plates, and pacemaker cases. The medical field uses this metal for a number of purposes.

Titanium also has a unique appearance, strength despite high temperature, nonmagnetic qualities, and melting points that are high. Its strength to weight ratio may be one of its biggest assets. It resists oxidizing, and corrosion from salt and brackish water, and has flexibility, and thermal conductivity thanks to its low elasticity modulus.
